Final Masthead...

After deciding on my magazine name i set out to create the masthead in Photoshop - I added drop shadows, inner shadows, outer glow and strokes to the font in order to create my final masthead.

My Magazine Name..

I have been working to decide what to call my music magazine, i narrowed the names down to two choices, the first of which is 'CLIQUE' and the other 'EGO'in order to decide what title to go with I have analysed both masthead names.

Analysis of 'Clique'

  • The definition of clique is 'a small close-knit group of people who do not readily allow others to join them'
  • This relates to the niche target audience that i have chosen for my magazine
  • The group of people i aim to please are familiar with the concept of a clique
  • Clique is also a popular song released by Jay z, Big Sean and Kayne west on 6/11/2012

Analysis of 'Ego'

  • The definition of Ego is 'a person's sense of self-esteem or self-importance'
  • This again could be seen to appeal to my target audience due to the high egos shown by the genres artists
  • Ego is a Beyonce song of her I Am.. Sasha Fierce album
After analyzing both masthead names I have chosen to go with Clique, i think the concept is more relate able to my niche target audience than that of ego

Cohens Moral Panic Theory...

According to Cohen, society is often subject to such instances and periods of moral panic; an occurrence which is characterised by ‘stylized and stereotypical’ representation by the mass media, and a tendency for those ‘in power’ (politicians, bishops, editors and so on) to man the ‘moral barricades’ and pronounce judgement. There are 5 main stages to a moral panic. These are;
  • Concern – There must be awareness that the behaviour of the group or category in question is likely to have a negative effect on society.
  • Hostility – Hostility towards the group in question increases, and they become "folk devils". A clear division forms between "them" and "us".
  • Consensus – Though concern does not have to be nationwide, there must be widespread acceptance that the group in question poses a very real threat to society. It is important at this stage that the "moral entrepreneurs" are vocal and the "folk devils" appear weak and disorganised.
  • Disproportionality – The action taken is disproportionate to the actual threat posed by the accused group.
  • Volatility – Moral panics are highly volatile and tend to disappear as quickly as they appeared due to a wane in public interest or news reports changing to another topic.

My Target Audience...

My target audience for my music magazine will be round the age of 16-22. My aim is to create a magazine featuring R&B stars that can be aimed towards a female audience. I believe that there is a space in the magazine industry for a female orientated R&B magazine as the majority of existing magazines (Vibe,XXL) tend to be aimed towards a male audience. The artists that the females would be interested in would be stars such as Jay Z, Kanye West and Beyonce. The magazine will be focused on male stars and  female stars and will include articles and photography that will be more to do with fashion and the music industry compared to the usual provocative images that are aimed at men. Fashion and gig reviews will play a major role in my magazine as this is what i find most interesting. It is important for me to create a magazine that I myself would want to buy, meaning that my target audience would be a 17 year old girl who loves the same music as me.
