More on Semiotics...

We looked at various signs and advertisements to understand the use of semiotics. Below I will explain the use of semiotics for the universal symbol for ladies toilets. 

  • This image conveys the idea that this area is for women only
  • It does this by clearly showing a woman's figure on the sign, this is a widely recognized symbol for women. 
  • The use of colour in this sign is a semiotic. Blue and white are hygienic, clean and non threatening colours.
  • there is no font used in this image, this is useful as the sign can be accessed by everyone from various languages. 
  • The semiotics used don't aim to convey any emotions. 
  • The significance to the symbol is that the figure used is a worldwide recognized sign that conveys the same meaning universally.
